As you may be aware the National Union of Teachers, who are following a programme of discontinuous action over cuts to school funding, the narrowing of the curriculum, increased workload and conditions of service, have called a day of strike action to take place on Tuesday 5th July 2016.
It is always the college’s main priority to try and minimise the effect on families and on the education of our students in such circumstances while recognising the rights of the teacher associations to take action.
The decision to close the college or send students home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, as staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, I will have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all students.
We have, after discussions with the Chair of Governors, risk assessed the effect of the numbers taking part in the action and have concluded that we cannot safely supervise the students with the amount of teachers who will be on site. Following this, the college will be closed to students on the above date.
We are aware that school closures inconvenience parents and carers and so I am writing to give you advance notice of the likely impact of the action on this college.
The college will be open as normal again on Wednesday 6th July.
