Minsthorpe Community College

Dear Parents and Carers

On behalf of the staff at Minsthorpe Community College, I am happy to welcome you to the 2018-19 college year!

We are looking forward to another year in which our productive partnership ensures that our children can achieve their highest potential. We recognise that in order to be successful in college, our children need support from both the home and college. We know that working with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities.

This promises to be a year filled with golden opportunities for all of our students as we strive to find ways that we can be even better than we have before! We embark on this journey with a pledge to you, our students and parents, that this will be a year of engaging, meaningful and rigorous work in our classrooms, combined with special events and a plethora of extra-curricular clubs and activities, performing arts activities, and sporting events certain to encourage our students to be involved and stay connected!

We look forward to a very positive and productive year together! We extend a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at college activities and events whenever possible. We want…we need…and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education! Your active participation is key to the success of your youngsters during their time at Minsthorpe.

We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that s/he:

  1. attends college daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience;
  2. completes all home learning assignments given by teachers;
  3. reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills;
  4. shares college experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her college life;
  5. informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject;
  6. knows that you expect him/her to succeed in college.

What a summer it was, with students from Minsthorpe again excelling themselves at both GCSE and Advanced Level. Our GCSE results saw an improvement for the third year in a row with the College again posting a positive Progress 8 score – no mean feat given that this was the first year when all of the changes to the GCSE courses took effect. At Post 16, students achieved their best ever results with our A*-A grades increasing from 9% last year to 19% this year. Once again the vast majority of students in Year 13 who made a Higher Education application got their first choice university! Superb stuff and evidence of what we are doing here at Minsthorpe and proof that the College has a significant impact on student achievement over both five and seven years of education at the College.

The refurbishment of the College has continued over the summer and the second phase will be complete by December 2018. The Main Hall and Soc/Voc area is now complete as is the cladding to the canteen. Over the summer the builders have made excellent progress on the Carnegie block and the College is looking totally renewed leaving only the Maths Block and PE Block now to be refurbished. Our next bid for funding from the government’s Condition Improvement Fund will go in this December.

Continuing the day-to-day activities of the College in the middle of a £3.4m build has thrown up its fair share of problems it is safe to say but we have managed despite losing a complete block in the College for an entire year and two months when two blocks were out of commission. An exercise in logistics to be sure!

We have also used external funding to improve the designated social areas in Maths and English and have installed two new canopies to provide extra shelter for students. These spaces will also double up as outside teaching rooms as well. The College continues to seek external funding in order to improve the physical environment for your sons and daughters and for future generations who will attend the College.

Please know that we highly value home/college communication here at Minsthorpe. It is vital and plays an integral role in each student’s success. We encourage you to contact us if/when the need arises, and to stay in the know about your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and college activities, as well as other events and happenings. Please make use of the School Gateway App as this is the main channel of communication between the College and you.

Again, we welcome you to Minsthorpe and to our wonderful learning community. It is a place alive with much energy, enthusiasm and a high standard of excellence! It is, indeed, a place where opportunities abound! Here’s to a great new year as we work together to make our college a great place to work and learn each day! The wonderful Minsthorpe staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing to work with you and we hope to see you in college at one of the many events that are in the document below.

Yours faithfully

R.P. Henshaw
