Basic Skills

At Minsthorpe we aim to develop Basic Skills at all levels of ability and throughout all age ranges, although most support will be directed at those students who have difficulty accessing the curriculum, especially those in Year 7.

By "literacy" we mean reading, writing, oral communication, spelling, presentation and grammar.

"Numeracy" defines the ability to work with numbers in a variety of situations. It includes being able to interpret graphs and charts, to weigh and measure, to recognise shapes and to use the four rules of arithmetic to solve problems mentally, orally and on paper.

The following definition appears to encapsulate all we are hoping that every student will have the opportunity to achieve:

"The ability to read, write and speak English and use Maths at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general."
