We have been informed by the headquarters of the NUT that their members will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on Thursday, July 10th 2014. Unison is also striking on the same day.
This action is NOT against the College itself but is part of national industrial action organised by this trades union about changes to the teachers’ pay and conditions and to the education system.
There is no requirement on the unions to inform us of which members of staff will take action, and it may be that they will not know themselves who will take up the call to strike on the day.
It would not be legal for the college to be closed ‘in sympathy’ with the strike, however, our main concern is the safety of our students and those staff who are not on strike. I have no way of knowing with certainty the number of staff who will be available to work on the day so in consultation with the Governors, the decision has been taken to close the college to students as we cannot supervise students and guarantee their safety.
Staff not striking will attend for work as normal.
College will be closed to students on July 10th 2014
Should the strike be called off before next Thursday, a message will be placed on the home page of the College website.
Any educational visits that were scheduled for Thursday July 10th 2014 have been postponed. However, the Summer Show will go ahead as planned that evening.
We must all hope that the issues over which the industrial action has arisen reach a negotiated resolution as soon as possible.
College will re-open to all students on Friday 11th July.
